Contemporary dance workshop Easter Week 2019.

Contemporary dance technique evolves from classical ballet, making use of the natural laws of gravity in order to allow a relaxed movement with released muscle tension and minimal effort in execution. In classical Ballet these natural laws are constantly challenged in an effort to overcome them.

The Release technique, on the other hand, is a method used in contemporary dance to reinforce these principles. It helps develop awareness about body alignment, breathing and weight distribution. We must bear in mind that contemporary dance gives importance to the recovery of the body as an emotional and sensory device and this "release" technique, born in the early seventies, generates different ways of executing and composing movement in space helping us to better experience this process.

My methodology is based on the working together of mind and anatomical body to enable us to dance with our whole being, letting emotions and thoughts be part of the movement. Technique must be the instrument to free ourselves from the fear of not being able and not knowing how to move.

Technique, however, comes after experiencing the pure sensation of movement. When this process is organized fluidity begins, dance begins, the technique emerges as a basic need to flow, to dance.

In this workshop we will use the opposition between contraction and release as an inspiration to move, because relaxation does not exist without tension and tension does not exist without contraction. And let’s not forget that any reaction of the human being is expressed with muscular contractions.
