Dance Theatre Workshop, Summer 2018. Intensive Workshop
THE USE OF RANDOMNESS TO EXPLORE PERSONAL MOVEMENT WITHOUT NEGATIVE JUDGEMENT

In this workshop, we will give you tools to improvise on stage.

The use of chance procedures to select movements is a great liberating act and allows us to break loose from ourselves.

By letting chance decide, we reject a world view where everything is governed by the principle of causality.

Randomness or arbitrariness allows for everything to happen, noise and action but also silence.

Chance as the realm of acceptance and reassertion.

In this workshop, we will give you tools to improvise on stage, using your body to create a new language and help you to overcome limitations and restrictions by letting random movements, selected by chance, come into play.

When performing on stage, we experience time and space in a different dimension, outside of the ordinary, somewhere in the proximity of chaos; to accept chaos means to accept chance.

When improvising, we become conscious of the unique and unrepeatable quality of the movement sequence we are just about to generate. In this creative process, we learn to accept ourselves, cast away negative judgements and use our free will; in order to be able to create and improvise from this state of freedom and acceptance, which bring us into contact with the unknown, we have to take responsibility for thoroughness and accuracy.

Contents. Dance Theatre Workshop, Summer 2018. Intensive Workshop.

  • Contemporary dance technique to organize movement sequences.
  • Contact Improvisation technique to explore the skills of shared weight, counterbalance, momentum and responsiveness to our partners and surroundings.
  • Emptiness and form.
  • Reliance, proficiency and detachment.
  • Motor skills and the nervous system.
  • Simultaneity of everything that happens: Chance/Randomness.
  • Indeterminacy, searching for the unknown.
  • The use of chance procedures in the creative process.
  • When improvising, every movement seems to arise by pure coincidence but, in fact, it stems from somewhere deep inside of us and brings to the surface our genuine self; when we create from this state of mind everything falls into place, every movement is coherent.
  • Structured improvisation will prevent us from falling into the same movements we know and like.
  • Identifying and breaking stereotypical movement patterns.
  • Spontaneously create movement without seeking approval.
  • Synchrony.
  • Free yourself from artistic responsibility and from any form of judgment when improvising.
  • We will use Chinese oracle I CHING, also called the Book of Changes.
  • Dance composition techniques based on randomness as used by choreographer Merce Cunningham.

Objectives. Dance Theatre Workshop, Summer 2018. Intensive Workshop.

  • Use dance technique to overcome your limitations.
  • Don't let your thoughts interfere with or block your movement.
  • Be alert and make your body available; open all your receptive channels.
  • Search for a neutral creative mode without imposing your subjective point of view.
  • Accept your way of moving and dancing and cast away prejudices or negative judgements.
  • Dissociate yourself from the movement you've created and let it stand for itself.
  • Don't strive for a final result when executing a dance sequence, but rather put the emphasis on the creative process by keeping it open and alive.
  • Free your imagination from its own clichés and don't let the mind interfere with movement.
  • By putting your attention on the creative process rather than on the outcome you will not built a movement sequence based on aesthetic form.
  • Improvise with discipline, realizing that not everything is good enough to be included.
  • Accept the unknown without being afraid of the it; use everything you've learned in a rather irrational, unintellectual way.
  • Let intuition guide your imagination and learn not to be afraid of making mistakes.
  • Use your body as a means of expression, as a means to create art.

Methodology Dance Theatre Workshop, Summer 2018. Intensive Workshop.

  • Having trained as a contemporary, ballet and African dancer, I have developed a very personal movement style and improvisation technique. My acting experience has lead me to realize how important the energy on stage is and therefore I have been working on techniques to improve dancer's stage presence. I have often asked myself and tried to explore, how to acquire a body that could express words through movement, a body that could express all of that, which reason cannot.
  • I've studied the Alexander technique and yoga for some year.
  • I've performed as a professional dancer for many years.
  • At present, I'm teaching contemporary dance and dance theatre but also try to deepen my choreographic and performance practice through studio-based research.
  • Dance cannot evolve without experimenting, neither can I.
